The Bangalore Mountain Festival 2016: For All You Adventure Junkies

Bangaloreans, brace yourselves for the most exciting experience to hit the city, this February! The Bangalore Mountain Festival 2017 (BMF) is all set to fuel the buccaneer spirit and get your adrenaline pumping with some trailblazing pursuits that require some serious nerve and muscle to compete.

A two day Trail running, XC and Downhill MTB event, that takes adventure battles to a whole new level. With prize money up to 2 lakhs, up for grabs, there are various categories in which one can prove their grit: 10km trail run, 21km trail run half marathon, 30km mountain terrain biking and 1km downhill mountain terrain biking, further divided into Open Men, Open Women, and Elite Championships. Aimed at celebrating the country’s finest athletes by giving them an arena to test, challenge and showcase their endurance levels, BMF aspires to create tracks of European standards for Indians to progress onto international competitions.

The entire track has been built by hand over a course of two months – a gruelling task by itself – kudos to the organisers! Said to be one of the most trying trajectories in the Indian terrain, it includes traversing across four hills and some stair climbs. The upside? You will be surrounded by the most scenic views all along with fresh air to energize and motivate you throughout the course.

Since many people are changing their diet in order to be healthier, we have seen the demand for vegan food skyrocket. So if you’re a vegan or want to consider vegan options, here is a list of places that are either exclusively vegan or have vegan friendly options on their menu.

Before we jump into it, what exactly does being vegan mean? It’s when you exclude meat and all animal products from your meals because being animal friendly is one of the main ideas behind it. Fresh Pressery Cafe makes its Koramangala debut!

Now that Fresh Pressery Cafe has made its mark in Bangalore’s up and coming healthy lifestyle, they’ve opened another cafe in Koramangala. At the moment, they’re in soft launch mode for the next couple of months, which includes their famous salads, sandwiches, smoothies, and healthy desserts (gluten free). Pedal for the Planet 2016: Bangalore, get your cycling gear on!


Say What?

Yup, Embassy Group’s Pedal for the Planet is back with its 3rd edition and this year it’s being hosted at Embassy Springs, Bengaluru’s largest integrated masterplanned city.

This initiative stands true to the brand’s values on sustainability and green living. This year, they aim to encourage cycling enthusiasts to interact following increasing awareness of the competitive aspect of sport and we are personally looking forward to witness increased participation this year from cycling enthusiasts all around Bangalore!

Volt Energy Club – The Latest Buzz in Town

For a while now, all we’ve heard about is “this awesome new gym in Indiranagar” (12th Main, HAL 2nd Stage to be exact) from people who can’t seem to get enough. Officially curious, we did a little bit of research that led us to Volt Energy Club, a swanky gym that has sophisticated amenities and services.

Get Healthy With Smoke House Deli

Bangalore slowly but surely is getting very health conscious when it comes to eating out. More often than not, going out for a meal results in a bit of indulgence, which some of you may or may not regret. However, thanks to Smoke House Deli’s healthy options menu, you can now eat out without feeling (too) guilty.

Bringing fun and flavour to the term ‘healthy’, the folks at Smoke House Deli (on Lavelle Road) introduced a special, and fairly elaborate menu of healthy yet scrumptious food that covers everything from vegan to vegetarian to dairy free and even some paleo.

What I Ate:


The Paleo Coconut and Seafood Broth (pictured above) was one of my favourites on the menu. A Thai-inspired soup that has been created for the lactose intolerant foodie without compromising on flavour. Strong accents of lemongrass and coriander make this a favourite for almost any time of the year.


Smoke House Deli has also included gluten-free pasta (made from scratch) with their signature non-wheat flour. We were served a plate of the Jowar Gnocchi and Mushroom Fricasse (pictured above). Unfortunately, the jowar didn’t quite cut it for me, however everyone else at the table did seem to enjoy the flavours and kept going back for seconds.

My personal favourite out of all was the Grilled Vegetable Ravioli with Coconut and Soya Milk (pictured above). Served with sunflower seeds, the sauce tasted fabulous with ravioli that was cooked perfectly.

I was looking forward to seeing what dessert had in store. The Banana Flour Cake with Carrot Pate (pictured below) surprised me. It didn’t look mouth watering, but definitely had all the flavours on point.

Despite staying away from all the good stuff like cheese, butter, oil and more, the meal was quite filling without making me feel bloated and drowsy.

I’ve been back to the Lavelle Road Smoke House Deli twice since, and have never missed ordering the Paleo Coconut and Seafood Broth and the classic Watermelon with feta and arugula salad.

Kudos to the chefs for going the extra mile to bring the terms ‘healthy food’ and ‘tasty food’ closer to one another. It won’t be love at first bite for many people, but do make your way through the extensive menu and find your respective favs!

HIIT it hard for Spring!

Hey Bangalore!

After a much needed break, we are back to help you become the healthiest version of yourself just in time for spring.  This week’s workout is inspired by new movements and skills I picked up while working out with The Outfit’s expert trainers.

This workout can be done at home with no equipment, or at the gym if you want to add a little extra resistance to these already grueling movements.

Click on the movement, or check out the pictures below for any clarifications you may need on the parts of the workout.

Here’s the workout: 

Pike push up or standard push up 30 seconds
10 seconds rest
Double unders or single skips with jump rope 30 seconds
15 seconds rest
Jumping lunges forward or Alternating static lunges 30 seconds
20 seconds rest
Hand stand hold against wall/plank hold 30 seconds
25 seconds rest
Tuck jumps 30 seconds
30 seconds rest

Repeat 4 times

If doing this in the gym, do the lunges with dumbbells for extra resistance.  If you don’t have a jump rope, substitute burpees for that portion of the workout!

Time to Crossfit: 7 of Bangalore’s Sweatiest and Healthiest Gyms

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you may have noticed that Bangalore is in the height of a fitness explosion.  We’ve even been dubbed the fittest city in India.

And one of the biggest reasons things have gotten so fit recently is because of the fitness craze everyone loves to hate…Crossfit.

So what exactly is Crossfit?

To put it very simply…It’s a workout where you get a score at the end.

The movements  are explained at the beginning of the workout (called a WOD) and everyone in the class competes for the best score.

Now… I know you’ve all HEARD of Crossfit. Believe me, I know. But maybe it’s time you finally gave it try.  Check out one of these gyms and see what it’s all about:

1.  Crossfit Once More– Narayanapura


This box was originally opened to help fund a local children’s home, all the while helping people reach their fitness goals.  It’s got a HUGE floor plan with more space than you will know what to do with.

#IHBLoves: Introductory classes every second Tuesday of the month.  Very affordable rates.  Multiple lifting platforms.  Trainers who have worked and trained internationally.  

2. Crossfit Genome– Cleveland Town/Cox Town

This box offers high intensity classes that are an equal balance of strength training and conditioning.

#IHBLoves: They offer weekly monitoring of your body composition!  An easy way to measure and brag about your gains. Heavy  emphasis on strength skills. (no pun intended) 

3.  Crossfit Edge– JW Marriot

This box is run by one of Bangalore’s most well known fitness fanatics.  Harihara Palani.  I had the privilege of working out with him years ago, and he’s one of the most motivating and knowledgeable people I’ve come across in the industry

#IHBLoves: Amazing facilities and equipment.  Upbeat and motivating coaches to keep you moving when you want to give up.

4.  Crossfit For Sure– Kammanahali 

Run by an incredibly fit group of trainers who are passionate about what they do, this box is a definite “must see.”

#IHBLoves: Fully set up rigs with Olympic rings and up to date equipment.  Trainers who are incredibly dedicated to the sport of Crossfit.

5.  The Outfit– Kammanahali


Ok, so these guys are NOT a Crossfit gym.  But I had to put them on this list because I think they offer something that has not really been seen in this city before: A chance for someone to work on pure strength and conditioning without
the pressure or competition of a Crossfit WOD.

#IHBLoves: Some of the fittest and most knowledgeable trainers in the city.  (They were even named Bangalore’s fittest gym!)  They work on correct form for all lifts, and track their members progress from session to session.  

6.  Namma Crossfit- Cunningham Road and Koramangala

These guys are the OG’s of Crossfit in Bangalore…I would be surprised if you hadn’t heard about them.

Crossfit Primero at The Tribe definitely has done a lot for building a passion for fitness within its members.  It has grown exponentially and does a great job of keeping its trainers and coaches certified and constantly evolving.

Your Fitness Motivation for 2016: The Man Who Cycled to Goa

Well, Bangalore, here we are, a month into 2016…

Many of us may be sitting around thinking of how we’re too old or too out of shape to make a new start into fitness, so we’re here to give you some much needed motivation to get you on the right track to finding the new fit you.

So, I’m here to tell you guys about one bad-ass Bangalorean…Sebastian Francis.  The man who wanted to go to Goa…so he decided to cycle there.

Sebastian, the fifty-something father and fitness fanatic, never lets age or distance stop him from his fitness goals.  He re-discovered his love of outdoor activities and cycling a few years ago while in Leh (a part of the Himalayas).  As a way of preparing himself for the Tour de Nilgiris, he decided to cycle to Goa, a distance of 660 km!1078878_10200364950430735_976553364_o

Here’s a quick run down of what Sebastian did to prepare for this adventure, and a quick reminder to all our readers that it’s never too late to go after your fitness goals:

How long have you been cycling? Where did the passion start?

Outdoor activities have always interested me. In 2012, a friend and I decided to cycle up the road from Leh to Khardungla Pass, which is the highest motorable road in the world. It wasn’t easy at all but we did it.  I was tired and exhausted physically but completely motivated in spirit.

This ride rekindled my inherent passion for outdoor activities and there after I took to cycling regularly over the weekends.

You recently cycled to Goa…Where did your motivation come from? 

My greatest asset is my mental strength and endurance. I firmly believe that there are somethings in life you just have to do and hence the decision to go ahead with this ride didn’t take long. My passion for outdoor activities was my motivation to embark on this solo ride.

So you rode 660 km, how long did that take you? 

Five days.  I did 125 km a day and then celebrated with some close friends while getting some much needed relaxation. 

 Any advice for people who want to train for a long ride like yours?

Crossfit and kettle bell classes are also a great way to get and stay in shape!

HIIT It Hard: A “New You” Workout

Hey Bangalore!

Hope everyone is ready to get in their first new year/new year workout.  Just like our last workout, this one has an optional soundtrack to keep you moving and keep you motivated, so I hope everyone’s ready for some Tabata!

You will need a timer for this workout, as timing is crucial for Tabata drills! Or you’re like me and hate watching the clock, you can play this Tabata song which will keep track of the timing for you…just listen to coach!

Here’s the workout:

Pushups/Alternating pushups 20 seconds
10 seconds rest
Jump rope/Double Unders 20 seconds
10 seconds rest

Squats/Air Squats 20 seconds
10 seconds rest
Situps/Scissor Situps 20 seconds
10 seconds rest

Burpees 20 seconds
10 seconds rest
Burpees 20 seconds
10 seconds rest

Pushups/Alternating pushups 20 seconds
10 seconds rest
Jump rope/Double Unders 20 seconds
10 seconds rest

Rest one minute

Repeat 4 times!

HIIT IT: What Goes Up, Must Come Down!

I LOVE this week’s workout.  Not only will it get you sweating, but it comes with its very own sound track!

You will do this workout along side Moby’s song “Flower” so you need to have access to the song.

The lyrics go “Bring Sally up…bring Sally down.”  You are Sally.  You can do this with squats OR push-ups OR both.

Workout 1 “Bring Sally Up”

How to do it: 

  1.  Play the song “Flower
  2. When the lyrics go, “Bring Sally up” you stand
  3. When the lyrics go, “Bring Sally down” you squat and hold at the bottom
  4. Do this for the whole song
  5. Rest one minute and move on to Workout 2

While it sounds easy…it is not.  You need to hold the squat OR push- up at the bottom of the movement until you are told to come back up.

 If doing the push-up, you hover off the ground. 

Add weights to the squat to make it more difficult!  Watch the video at the bottom to see how it is done

Workout 2: 

 25 meters bear crawl
50 high knees or skips with jump rope
25 second hollow hold or plank
50 second rest

Repeat 5 times

The OutFit: Bangalore’s Fittest Gym

Be careful guys…this gym is not for the weak of heart, spirit, or mind.

Tucked away in Kammanahalli is one of Bangalore’s fiercest workout spots.  It has everything you could want in a gym: Trainers that are motivating yet demanding, and equipment that is hard and heavy.

How The Outfit is different: 

The OutFit is not a Crossfit gym.  It’s not.  They don’t care about points or scores. They care about making their gym members stronger and fitter. Here you can focus on developing aspects of strength and conditioning, without any of the competition or pressure some may feel in a Crossfit box.

What to expect:

The workouts are high intensity, and can cover a range of skills and/or movements.  They are not scored or timed, you are simply expected to finish the workout, and try not to die. Try really hard.

Everyone. Whether you’re a gym newbie or a fitness guru, they will make sure you feel challenged and supported the whole time you are there.

Even just being in the presence of the trainers is motivating, they are some of the fittest people I have ever met.  Like ever. This explains why they have won the title of “fittest gym” at this year’s Devil’s Circuit race.

Hoodlum: Bangalore’s Next Fitness Competition!

What is Hoodlum?

Hoodlum is a fitness competition taking place over the next three weekends at either Namma Crossfit or The Hood.  The winners from each round will progress to the next set of workouts, and the top three win CASH MONEY.  Pretty sweet, huh?

When is Hoodlum?

The dates are as follows:

5th December – Round 1: CrossFit Trials

12th December – Round 2: Rowing and Psycling Trials

19th December – Finals: TOP 10 athletes from the aggregation of Round 1 & 2

How do you register?

You need to register with a manager at one of Namma’s facilities or with a manager at The Hood.

What does it cost?

1,800 for non members
1,200 for members of Namma or The Hood

What can I win if I dominate?

1st place gets 10,000
2nd place gets 5,000
3rd place gets 2,500

But really, the money isn’t important.  It’s all about the glory and opportunity to hang out with some of the coolest members of Bangalore’s fitness community.

At The Hood!



Weekly Workout: Keep Calm and HIIT It!

Hey Bangalore!  This week’s workout requires nothing more than a timer,  your floor, and an old back pack if you’re doing it at home.

Fill your backpack with whatever you have laying around, and say hello to your new workout buddy! (depending on your fitness level, it should weigh anywhere from 5-20 kgs)

Here are the movements…check them out before you do the workout:

Back squats (squats with the backpack on your back)

Weighted push-ups (push-ups with the backpack on your back)

Front squats (squats with the backpack on your chest)

Here’s your home workout:

Using your backpack as your weighted resistance, complete the following circuits

40 seconds back squats (as many as possible)

30 seconds push-ups (as many as possible)

40 seconds front squat (as many as possible)

30 second plank hold (with back pack on OR off)

Rest 30 seconds

Repeat five times

Finisher: Jump rope (250 skips)
High knees (120 reps) 

During the workout:

Be sure to keep your butt back on the squats, and if you start leaning forward, LOWER THE WEIGHT!  If your hips are sinking while doing the plank, LOWER THE WEIGHT!  Or take the back pack off completely.  In other words…Check yourself before you wreck yourself.

If you’re looking to get a workout in at the gym, do the same workout with a barbell for the squats, and a plate for the push-ups and the plank.

Bangalore’s First Zumba Fitness Party: Get Ready to Monster Mash!

If there’s one thing I know about Luru’s fitness scene, it’s that almost everyone is going CRAZY for Zumba!

And for the first time ever, Zumba fanatics are getting together, in the spirit of Halloween, to burn off their candy calories.  But what’s even more fantastic is that all proceeds of this event will go to the Karnataka Cancer Society.  Amazing! Right?

You get to Zumba AND help out people in our amazing city!

In case you don’t know what Zumba is: it’s a high octane, dance-until-you-drop type workout that is done to a range of popular music.  In addition to getting a great workout in, you will get to show off your glitziest glammest Halloween costume and join in on Bangalore’s hottest fitness craze.

Tickets are 200 rupees, and can be bought here! 

Prizes will be given out to the person in the best costume AND to the best dancer.  So get your friends and family together, and celebrate the spirit of giving and the spirit of Halloween!

Weekly Workout: HIIT it or Quit It!

Hey Bangalore!  It’s almost time for Halloween and all the fall and winter fun we look forward to!

Before we swing into the holiday season, it’s  great time to start setting new fitness goals, and a great time to improve on old ones.  These workouts are designed to challenge your whole body, and they’re finished in less than 20 minutes. Make it your goal to do a HIIT workout at least four times a week…trust me, your body will thank you.

This week’s, “at home” workout was sent in by one of our readers!  It requires nothing more other than a wall, and a box or platform.  The higher the platform, the harder the workout will be!

(Workout Hack: You can make a box/platform by stacking two or three books together…it doesn’t have to be anything fancy.  Using a basketball is great as well!)


45 seconds high knees or mountain climbers
20 bicycle crunches (10 to each side)
45 seconds wall sit with arms overhead

Rest 30 seconds

Alternating push up

45 seconds alternating pushup (use your platform/ball/floor)
20 jumping jacks
45 seconds wall sit with arms overhead

30 seconds rest

45 seconds sit-ups
20 burpees
45 seconds walking lunge

30 seconds rest

(Repeat three times)


24 dumb bell squats
12 over head strict shoulder press
6 push presses

step up
Weighted step up

12 weighted step ups (6 each side)
24 dumb bell squats

Rest one minute

(Repeat three times)

Welcome to the Hood: Bangalore’s first ever hyper gym!

Spoiler Alert: This gym is really really really cool.  I’m in LOVE with it!


The owners of The Hood, Abinav Narayan and Shruti Choudhari,  have already done a tremendous amount for Bangalore’s fitness scene.  I got  chance to speak to  Abinav and, to get his take on why this is THE gym to check out this month.

If you don’t know Abinav:  He is the man who started Namma Crossfit.  Yes, that’s right…THE Namma Crossfit.  The gym that started it all and brought high intensity training to our fine city.

Here’s what he had to say:

So, what IS The Hood?  Why should we be excited?

The Hood is every fitness fanactic’s dream.  Imagine experiencing the most effective fitness programs under the same roof! That’d be wonderful, right?  So that’s exactly what we did. We brought everything together just for you.

What programs or spaces can we find at The Hood? 

There’s three spaces people can use:

1. The CrossFit Box:  This is where people can experience Namma Crossfit and  build all aspects of their general fitness.


It’s a combination of all forms of fitness including weight training, body weight training, gymnastics and conditioning.

2. FightCraft: People can train in traditional fighting arts like  Tae-Kwon-Do along with the more modern forms of fighting – Boxing, MMA, Muay Thai.


People can either pursue a belt program or train to participate in amateur and pro fight

3. ABSinthe : The bulk of the cardiovascular conditioning will be done in this space.  It includes yoga, rowing,  and cycling.

In fact, people can come check out our unique Psycling classes for something new!

This sounds fantastic.  What are the membership options?

You can sign up for one space exclusively, or sign up for all three spaces.  You get unlimited usage for whatever you sign up for.

Can I train alone if I want?

Yes! Or you can join our group classes.  You can form your fitness however you want, but you should definitely come check it out and see what sets us apart from any other gym you have experienced. 

My take-away:

Now Bangalore, as a fitness fanatic, after hearing about these new spaces, I simply HAD to go check out The Hood.  So I did.  I so did.

I LOVE IT!  I absolutely love it.  The “feel” of the place is incredible.  It’s a gym that you would actually want to hang out in.  No joke.

The equipment is new, and there are so…many…options:  You can row, cycle, flip tires, climb ropes, swing kettle bells, punch heavy bags…you can literally do anything. I was like a kid in a candy store.  A fitness candy store!

But don’t take my word for it. Come check it out yourself, or check out one of Abinav’s other gyms in Koramangala or Cunningham Road.
