Bangalore’s Famous Flea Markets: Our Top 5 for Budget Shopping, Food + Fun!

If there is one thing that our city loves, it’s a good bargain! Thankfully, there are many options to choose from as Luru plays host to a wild variety of flea markets that are a culmination of great shopping deals, interesting finds, music for the soul and food for a happy belly. Drop in at any one of these fleas for a fun-filled and memorable experience:

Sunday Soul Sante

Our first mention goes to SSS for being the pioneer in kick starting the flea market culture in the city. The property that started off as a seasonal celebration featuring art, craft, music and food, quickly had the luru shopaholics and weekend revelers blocking their dates weeks in advance. SSS promises and delivers a brand new experience with every edition. No wonder their impressive list of admirers include celebrities like actors Diganth and Aindrita Ray, fashion guru Prasad Bidapa and the one and only Kiran Mazumdar Shaw, amongst others!

Upcoming edition: New dates TBA. Follow them here for updates.

Declutter Flea

This one is for all those clothes that we bought a size smaller, with the miraculous hope of shedding the extra kilos, only as they lie in our closet with tags intact. Or that closet full of gifts that just don’t catch our fancy but are too good to throw away. Time to Declutter – a flea market specially curated for pre-loved goods. Whether you are a buyer or a seller, this one is a win-win!

Upcoming edition: New dates TBA. Follow them here for updates.

Green Haat

Instead of braving your way through the luru traffic, this flea market comes to you! Green Haat, is your friendly neighborhood flea market that brings together an exciting combination of fun, food and shopping. You may already have spotted them, as they make their rounds across various tech parks, adding energy to your boring work routine.

Upcoming editions: 22nd & 23rd Sept at Embassy Golf Links, Domlur | 29th & 30th Sept at Manyata Embassy Business Park, Nagawara

The Silver Bazaar

A flea market organized by The Silver Surfers Club, a union that believes in ‘Empowerment in Retirement’. With the high levels of energy and flowing creativity, they are out to prove that fun knows no age limit! With evolving themes for each market such as ‘The Swinging 60’s Silver Bazaar’, ‘The Silvers Summer Bazaar’ and the upcoming ‘Silver Bazaar Under the Stars’, the range of goodies on sale make coupled with delicious food and entertainment make for a wonderful experience.

Upcoming edition: 24th Sept at Royal Orchid Hotel, Domlur

Kitsch Mandi

Kudos to this innovation of a flea market that has managed to turn itself into a community of sorts, with crowds of sheer worshippers flocking to each of their markets. Showcasing a self-proclaimed tag of being a ‘Festival of Emerging Indian Artists’, it stays true to its nature. Kitsch Mandi is a flamboyant display of art, culture and talent that echoes free spirited creativity as its characteristic theme.

Upcoming edition: New dates TBA. Follow them here for updates.

Be Vintage: For all your refurbishing needs!

The Brain Behind It
For Bangalore born and bred Monica, home decor was something she happened to chance upon. It started off with her painting her own bookshelf at home. The fact is, everyone loves DIY, but rarely do they find time to do the same, so it made perfect sense for her to start doing simple things like frames, coasters that have now gradually grown into furniture pieces because of Luru’s increasing demand.
The Vintage Factor
FACT: History repeats itself. This holds true to furniture as well. We think minimalistic and contemporary furniture can get quite tiring and monotonous. What better way to do that than bring back the old world charm by restoring a gem once owned?
We love the whole bespoke refurbishing process that Be Vintage goes through with each item with immense attention to detail!
10354145_858405800883032_4984646485660403461_n Each piece is given a complete makeover. It’s almost like having a brand new piece. Most of the furniture  is polished, treated, prepped and painted over with their signature vintage look. Customisation also includes carpentry depending on the condition of the piece or depending on how the client wants it changed.

04_JPGBangalore based 27 Décor Street is an online platform for buying furniture, home decor, lighting, and even art. The website was launched by mother and son Nishu and Dhruv Jouhari. From modern to vintage to quirky to classic, there’s a wide range of products to pick from. Oh, and you’ll find stunning paintings by PR Rathod and more.

The e-commerce world is filled with shopping platforms that sell everything under the sun. However, 27 Decor Street strictly and painstakingly ensures their customers receive the best of quality and design. Raw materials are studied, manufacturers’ facilities are visited, and a final check on composition and quality provides the customer with nothing but the best.

This venture consists of individuals that have over 20 years of combined experience in the furniture industry, which means they truly understand the product and the customer.

Want to cook a gourmet meal but too lazy to grocery shop? HappyChef is your solution!

Feel like having those Udon noodles and teriyaki chicken that you ate last week? Or perhaps you’re too busy to step out on a weekday for that thai-style chicken salad that you love?’s “Happy Chef” meals are the solution for you and we LOVE it! Just buy one of the many exotic ready-to-cook meal options from Bigbasket and get cracking! They have 30+ ready to cook meals ranging from salads, minis, to mains across different cuisines including American, European, Italian, or Thai.

So I thought I’d try out a salad for starters and start a bit easy. They sent me the Chicken with Cranberries & Dijon Mustard Dressing. What I loved even before I opened the parcel or made the dish was:

  • The ingredients were beautifully curated and compiled
  • They smelt/tasted completely fresh
  • They were packaged oh-so-neatly in their own non-leak plastic packets
  • Happy Chef even has 24hr iced freezing bags inside, in case of delays to prevent spoilage.
  • Attention to detail was amazing (even a tiny sachet of salt and pepper was packed in!).
  • The ingredients seemed to be of top quality, which is not what I expected for such a reasonable amount.

IMG_1325 (2)

They send a cute little recipe card on how to make the dish and how many people it serves as well. I decide to try this out for dinner last night, and it took me literally 1 minute to mix everything up and have a restaurant quality salad. Have a look at how easy it was below:

And… done!

Gifting Guide – We round up 6 types of Diwali gifts our city has to offer!

1. Something Bespoke

You can never go wrong with chocolate. It never disappoints and it’s the right kind of safe! We swear by our fav Luru chocolatier, Rage.

What we love the most about them is that they have the most vast array of packaging options we’ve seen in the city! Even if you keep gifting the same chocolates, it’ll never ever get or look monotonous!

Their pricing ranges from around Rs. 450 for as little as 6-8 chocolates to 1250 for 24 chocolates and so on (give or take depending on how fancy your box is).

There are certain boxes that they’ll personalise for you as well, which makes it even more awesome. Always open to a fun challenge of creating a personalised hamper, we think this is the most flexible option in terms of getting exactly what you want this Diwali!

~ Tall candle holders – Rs. 1000/- each

They’re open to compiling customised hampers, and doing orders as per requirement as well, so go on, and light up your DiwalI!

3. Something Unconventional

Why not go non-traditional, and send some of Luru’s best macarons in a box to loved ones instead? It is mithai after all and super cute to look at 🙂

Yauatcha has adorable little Diwali boxes of this sweet treat that they have launched for the season. Each box costs Rs.350/- (not bad at all we think!) and what’s amazing is, if you have a bulk order above 50 boxes they will customise the box with your name, logo and a special message inside the box for free! An added bonus is, if you book before 15th Oct you can also enjoy a discount of 10%.

We think this is a sweet deal, in more ways than one!

4. Something Sweet

Oooh the yummiest homemade chocolates and dessert in the city. Shilpa Gulati desserts are an already famous Diwali tradition if you’ve been living here long. We swear by their almond rocks and gorgeous chocolate tarts.

Their boxes of chocolates as shown above range between Rs. 550-700/-. Pretty reasonable we think! Their chocolates by kilograms are priced at:

~ Chocolate rocks at 1200 per kg.
~ Chocolate almond rocks at 1300 per kg.

What is amazing is, Shilpa Gulati bakes like a goddess too, so we recommend you check out the zillion gorgeous cheesecakes, tarts, mousse goodies and sponge cakes she retails as well. Who said a box of something sweet can’t contain a lovely Oreo Cheesecake instead 😉

~ Deli Delights (Rs. 2500+) – a classy woven cane basket includes gourmet treats such as macaroons, assorted cookies, handcrafted chocolate shoes, muffins, acake, traditional diyas, assorted chocolates & dry fruits.

~ Vino Celebrations (Rs. 5000+) –  a slightly more extravagant hamper filled with the house wine and select picks from the patisserie and deli section like the signature pasta, macaroons, handcrafted chocolate shoe, muffins, cake, diyas, assorted cakes and dry fruits.

They will also offer exclusive personalized hampers, which can be curated based on a guest’s requirement and preference. These hampers would entail their choice of champagne, wine or spirits accompanied with sweet and savoury items and price is on request!

6. Something Luxe

The hampers that Ritz Carlton Bangalore have compiled this holiday season will knock the socks, or should we say mojris, off anyone’s feet.

Their most expensive hamper, ‘Celebrate You’, priced at approx. Rs.15000 has everything. Wine, check. Wine glasses, check. Imported cheese, check. A lady’s scarf, check. A pocket square for the gentleman, check. You name it, and it has it. It’s a holistic package of true luxury rolled into one giant hamper.

What’s great is, they ALSO have slightly more affordable hampers available that won’t burn a hole through your pocket such as:

~ The Traditional Hamper (Rs. 4500+) – A gold plated thali, diyas, dry fruits and mithai to name a few goodies

Luru gets some Spicy Sangria!

Spice up your Saturday on 23rd Aug with the one-day lifestyle exhibition that is Spicy Sangria! Designers from all over the country will be showcasing their collections from 11:00am-7:30pm at Taj Vivanta, MG Road.

Spicy Sangria originally started off as a lifestyle and fashion blog for the locals of Mumbai by Shaan S Khanna. Her mother, Sharmilla Khanna, on the other hand is an event manager in Mumbai, which gives you the perfect mother-daughter duo!

Due to its past success, tomorrow will be their third edition. We have previously gone crazy shopping at the event; so you do not want to miss it. Trust us.

We promise that you will find a plethora of clothes, jewellery and home décor from designers like: Trupsel, Leena & Tahira, TAD, Soul Affair and The Mauve unit to name a few. Oh and – wait for it – Nikhil Thampi & Vikram Phadnis (our personal favs) will also be flaunting their stunning collection! Even though most of the designers are from Delhi and Mumbai Luru’s very own ethnic designer, Ravina Belani will be showcasing her stuff as well.

The exhibition is also associated with an initiative by Hothur Charitable Trust called ‘Colours of Hope’ where children express themselves through their art. We think that’s pretty awesome.

We urge you to look forward to tomorrow as much as we are because what’s better than spoiling yourselves with a bit of retail therapy while helping a good cause?

So we’re seeing you tomorrow then 😉 xx
